About Matt Davis; Design & Craft for Interiors & Architecture

As the vessel can be seen as a pivotal marker in the development of civilisation, this work aims to mark society in the Information Age.

Pastiche archetypal forms are created by combining computers with traditional techniques and result in parody by using high technology to make ‘lo-tech’ artefacts.

The immortalisation of intangible code via transmutation of organic matter is central to the work’s theme of dualism and paradoxically presents virtual forms in physical reality.

While augmenting dialogues concerning the handmade versus machine the intention is to confront perceptions of digital tooling in relation to Craft.

After 15 years in the digital design field Matt Davis returned to follow his initial passion for clay which resulted in 1st class honours with a Masters in Design.

Since graduating in 2016 the work has been featured in books by Sasha Wardell (Procelain and Bone China (Second Edition) Crowood) and Louisa Tayor (Ceramics Mastercalss, Thames & Hudson). It has also published in such magazines as Wallpaper*, Financial Times ‘How to spend it’, Architectural Digest (Germany) and Elle Decoration.

In 2019 Davis registered his designs for the first modular 3D, geometic tiles in the UK with the Intellectual Property Office. These have subsequently been commissioned by the St. Austell Bay Trust for permanent public installation in 2020.

Works are currently held in private collections and in the permanent collection at the Potteries Museum in Stoke-on-Trent.
